Social Media Networking

The subject of this posting is "Social Media Networking" and what do with it now since it is so new from a business point of view.

Before I get started with my comments, I just want to say that I ran across this newsletter/blog/website that is focused on social media.  It is called the "Social Media Examiner" and is a worthwhile read.

It is hard to say which website or system is considered the definition or perfect example of social media networking, facebook or twitter.  But many new websites have been created to take advantage of the popularity of websites like facebook and twitter.

The key factor is the various social media networking websites is the fact that these websites develop around groups of people who voluntarily join and participate because they have common interests.

I consider social media networking groups as a "warm market" as if it were made up of family, friends and acquaintances.  Marketing to a "warm market" depends upon creating relationships not promoting the benefits of our product or business.  Relationships help business people and networkers to exchange ideas, business tools and, in general, make contacts.

There are many social media network sites with more new ones everyday.  So my recommendation would be to focus on a few and develop your own network of new friends and business acquaintances within each.

From what I have observed in the groups that I am a member, almost all people already have businesses.  Therefore, they are not very receptive to new offers unless it is for something that helps them build their existing businesses.

There are two situations in which a group member may be interested in your business.  First, they are doing great and are interested in creating another source of income.  On the other hand, they may not be doing so well and would be willing to consider another business.

So where does that leave us?  Really simple. To market in the social media network arena, requires focusing on the product or service, not the business opportunity.

I have listed a number of social business networking sites at http://www.glenpalo.com/advertising.html.
