Hawaii is often judged by the photos that many of us are familiar with; however a brief history of Hawaii will soon present you that there is a lot more to this collection of islands than meets the eye.

A brief history of Hawaii will present that the first settlers to the Hawaiian islands were the Polynesians. They were followed by Tahitians who forced the Polynesians inland. The Tahitians created the primary big cultural revolution for Hawaii. When they came they brought with them Gods and Demi Gods who they worshiped. Additionally they presented a system kapu system that was their initial forms of laws.

A hierarchy was set up across the islands were by the areas were claimed as kingdoms and were then administrated independently. These kingdoms were divided further into places administrated by the chiefs. There was a strict social structure and there were kapu or taboos which guided the commoners through practically every aspect of their lives.

The chiefs were often warring with their neighbors and it had become the rule. This mode of life continued until the late 18th century. In 1791 the big island of Hawaii was united under one king. This was the most radical change in the history of Hawaii to date. Kahala went on to unite the whole of the Hawaiian islands by 1810.

On the death of Kahala his son took over and he removed the system of Taboos that made way for the new spiritual beliefs that were being introduced by the Christian missionaries.

The missionaries had started to arrive soon after Captain Cook had reached on the Hawaiian islands and had opened them up to the Europeans and the Americans.

The missionaries brought not only a new religious conviction, but in addition a western treatments and concepts. Over time the culture of Hawaii was changed and in 1840 the monarchy further lost control when Hawaii ceased to be a complete monarchy and government branches were formed.

Once there was a government in place the economy became increasingly more dependent on Western business and the reasonable step was to become a territory of the United States. This was achieved in 1898, however, complete statehood was not achieved until 1959.

It only takes a brief history of Hawaii to under stand why their traditions have become so vital. This little group of islands got very close to losing their uniqueness, that now they hold on and celebrate their individuality.
